There is no path to follow, you make the path by walking
I felt paralyzed.
I didn't know what to do with my life.
I had just left my job as a graphic designer at a marketing agency because it didn't feel fulfilling enough.
And as a young ambitious individual with very few responsibilities, I decided to trust my gut and quit.
But... Quit to then do what?
People who quit their jobs usually have a fairly defined backup plan. And I just didn't have one. In fact, I really had no clue about what I wanted to do next.
I felt guilty for weeks. Everyone around me was making moves and there I was, consumed by the fear of marking the wrong decision.
I'm a chronic perfectionist, so at that time, I felt like I would only be willing to take action once I knew what I wanted to commit to for the rest of my life.
And fortunately, my perspective changed the day I talked to a close friend of mine who's had a fair share of successes in both life and business.
I nervously told him that I felt lost. That I didn't know which road to turn next. I was at a crossroads and I felt overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options and possibilities.
He looked at me and smiled. It was then and there I realized he knew something I didn't about the art of decision-making.
"My friend, there's no path in life, you make the path." He said.
"The only way to find out what you really want is to just focus on making a decision instead of the decision."
"The more decisions you make, the closer you get to the truth."
You may feel like you want to move to a different country. The only way to find out is to go there and experience the culture.
You may want to start an internet business. The only way to find out is to get your feet wet and launch a bare-bones version of your idea to the market.
You see, a decision is like a small wooden boat.
It doesn't take that much time to build and it helps you get to the other side of the river so you can find out if there is what you're looking for.
You can't find out without the boat because it's a foggy day and the only way to see through the fog is to actually sail to the other side.
Worst case scenario, you can always turn around and sail back to where you came from.
You see, people spend too much time trying to make the right decision.
Instead, we should just aim to make a decision.
You can't think your way to the other side of the pond. The only way to get there is to take action.
Here's a beautiful quote from one of my favorite songs:
Walker, there is no path to follow, you make the path by walking
That same weekend I started building a new portfolio of small bets.
I challenged myself to experiment with something new every week.
I designed websites, apps, and physical products and I learned new tools by taking courses on topics I knew nothing about.
One late night, whilst I was procrastinating on my laptop, I discovered one of my favorite creators, Jack Butcher from Visualize Value.
As soon as I saw what he was doing I knew I wanted to do something similar with my own spin.
And here I am today, sharing this little story with you all because not so long ago I decided to stop waiting around and start taking action. If you aren't doing so already I encourage you to make the first step today, you won't regret it!
Thank you so much for making it till the end.
I truly appreciate your readership. It makes such a big difference.
Without you, I would just be talking to the void.
P.S
Just came back from a skiing holiday break in France!
I really needed to take a break from my toxic routine and have some fun with my friends whilst trying something different.
I feel so extremely fortunate.
